Adopt-a-turkey

Share
I've experienced several bumps in the road in my attempts to stop eating animal meat. Having practically been weaned on Polish kielbasa, I've had to fight my carnivorous urges. Thanksgiving is especially hard, but now that my mom gave up meat, it may become a bit easier. Still, this Thanksgiving I'm sponsoring a couple of turkeys in need. I love the organization Farm Sanctuary, which allows you to adopt a turkey.

When it comes to eating, it's another tofurkey holiday!

Cluttering the House: stereoscope

Share

I bought these stereoscope cards at a giant Flea Market in New Jersey. The bottom four are glass plates. I'm not quite sure yet how to display them. And I'm still hoping to obtain a turn-of-the-nineteenth-century stereoscope viewer.

Cluttering the house: decorating schizophrenia

Share

I moved to Philly in late January, and my house is still a mess. We're renting, for one, so I feel too unmotivated to decorate. The decor is completely schizophrenic right now, as you can see from the above examples -- all these bookshelves are next to each other.
One of my big goals is to pick a few themes, and base rooms around them. I love the 17th century Wunderkammer, and I'd love to base a room around that idea. Great inspiration here

Curmudgeon's guide

Share
I spent way too much time trying to figure out a name for this blog. And I could only come up with "the curmudgeon's guide to fabulous living." I'm sure some will find it annoying - with likely justification. But until I can think of a cleverer name, this is my blog about my domestic and social space. Specifically, how to feel better in both. I moved to Philly several months ago and hope to make it feel more like home. This blog will record some of my attempts to do this.

Most posts will be superficial -- style, decorating, cooking, getting out of the house to do stuff. Occasionally, or perhaps often, I will bitch and gripe. Because I'm a curmudgeon (though trying hard to reform), hence the name of the blog.

UPDATE: I finally got sick of the name, and have re-christened the blog as "Domestic Efforts."
